Say goodbye, Rose

near drowned schefflera arboricola

Ok, before I get back on the blogging bandwagon, I just have to let you know, Rose has left us. Rose is of course (in case you’re new around here) my ill fated schefflera arboricola “umbrella plant.” You see I over watered her a few weeks back and unlike her Titanic namesake, she was unable to hold on and she drowned. Sorry girl.

A reader suggested over on Facebook when she started to tip and be all droopy that I stick a dowel rod in the pot and tie her to it to help her grown strong and tall, like Forest Gump or something. Seemed like a good idea, and I thought there was still hope. However, I did not have a dowel rod, the only suitable thing I could find was a plastic fork. Hindsight being 20/20 it appears I shouldn’t have “stuck a fork in her” because now she’s done. Oops. Yes, I make awkward jokes to get through the tough times.

I also trotted out good ‘ole Patrice  for solidarity thinking maybe they could band together and Patrice’s healthy plant  vibes would help Rose’s sick vibes. No dice. Yes I drew them holding plant hands together like sisters. And yes, I AM a wicked awesome draw-er. Maybe my 17th career should be in illustration. Now accepting commissioned work…

So my number one take-away from this situation is stop over watering your plants. They’re not thirsty so leave them alone and stop looking at them with your plant killah eyes. Glad I got this off my chest, so please say your goodbye’s and we’ll move on to happier things this week. RIP Rose.

aww no. poor rose. i’m sorry she’s gone. i’ve got an umbrella plant too, and she hasnt got a name (maybe she should, assuming she’s a she) but she once got infected with aphids all over her on every single leaf, however i managed to get a plant spray from the garden centre, and she eventually fully revived. i find some plants seem to live & others seem to die, i treat them all the same & yet some thrive whilst others perish or suffer aphids :-( it’s a sad state of affairs when you do lose one though. i think there’s nothing more you could’ve done for poor rose. will you get another umbrella plant? X ps. i like you new look site.

Janine! I think I’ll take a break from the umbrella’s, I’ve got my eye on something fern-y. I seem to do ok with those.
