run, bike, rollerblade. move forward!

First day unemployed. First day trying to do all the things. As you read this I’m probably throwing up in the bathroom out of sheer terror. But whatevs, we’ve gotta move forward somehow. Run, bike, or blade onward ho! Mostly living by this.

August was a big month around these parts. I did lots of internetting, lots of writing, & lots of photos. It was really great. I launched the new blog, launched a new home page, started a newsletter, and you know the job thing.

So last month was kind of about me. I would like September to be about YOU. What would you like to see more of on Cubicle57? Leave a comment with your ideas/requests, and I’ll get to crackin’! You too new readers! Did you know almost half of visits coming in to Cubicle57 are first timers? Heyyyyyy, I see you, say hi. We’re nice!

Afternoon internet! Coming to you from the other side of employment, which means yes, today was my final day at my job. My replacement is awesome, smart, totally capable, and will be wonderful. I couldn’t be more excited and relieved that they found her. The amount of information that she absorbed in two and a half days is incredible. I think this is a true testament to the 20-somethings that are out there right now. Every single staff member that I have trained and worked with at this job has been outstandingly incredible at jumping in, learning, problem solving, saying “yes,” finding solutions when the answer is “no,” and in general making it work.

Our generation has been labeled the “slash” generation. Meaning we are no one thing in the workplace. Call this a byproduct of a downsized economy, short attention spans, job shopping, or just plain being awesome at all kinds of skillz (yes, with a z), the end result is pretty powerful if utilized in the right way. In no way do I deem myself an expert in anything really. However I do possess a useful skill set in A LOT of things. Web design, HTML, CSS, Photoshop, e-mail marketing, social media, writing, smoothing awkwardness with humor, unjamming printers/copiers/brains, data entry, answering phones, smiling, not smiling, saying no, and saying yes. It is my hope that there is a job out there for me where I can walk in with my bag of tricks, add more, develop on the existing, continually learn, and be part of a fantastic team of peers and mentors. It’s a big list, and if I can achieve half of what I’m looking for, this risk will have been worth it. Thank you for being there internet, you have taught me that these things are possible.

Enough about me, enough about jobs. You’re here to find out the winner of the giveaway yeah? a different perspective

So my last day at my job is Friday. I’ve had the draft of this post in my dashboard for three weeks, that’s how much notice I gave. My replacement starts today after lunch.

I didn’t intend to keep it a secret for so long, but I wanted to wait to tell the internet until the office hired my replacement and told the agents. I mostly just wanted to slip away quietly on a holiday weekend and never come back. It’s a personal decision and I didn’t want to get trapped in a conference room with cupcakes and goodbyes.

There might be more to say at some point, but basically I need a new outlook. I want a career, not a job. Maybe taking a page out of Sophie’s book and looking at my world upside down will be refreshing. Leaving this position without having another job absolutely terrifies me. But at this point I’ve pretty much got to bet on myself and trust that there is more out there for me.

A lot of the past year and a half has been exploration and learning for me. It’s time for me to give more dedication and energy to some of my freelance interests. Do I want to freelance full time? No, I like being a part of a team. I like going to work everyday. I excel at being a really solid component of a greater whole. I am actively looking for a new job, and am excited to have the emotional energy to do so. Attitude is everything.

Cubicle57 isn’t closing, she’s just moving. Do you know someone looking to hire a blogger/writer/social nerd with advanced “gettin’ shiz done” & “makin’ it werq” skills? I’m available, send them my way.
